ICC ODI Ranking: Battle for the No.1 Ranking Intensifies, How India claim the spot

ICC ODI Ranking: As the ODI World Cup 2023 approaches in less than a month, the competition for the number one position in ODIs is intensifying. Three teams are in contention for the coveted top spot, setting the stage for a thrilling cricketing spectacle. India’s prospects of reclaiming the number one ranking in ODIs, which they held until March 22nd of this year, received a boost following Australia’s recent defeat to South Africa in the third ODI of their ongoing away series.

Currently, Australia and Pakistan find themselves in a neck-and-neck battle at the summit of the ICC ODI standings, both with 118 points. India closely trails in second place with 116 points.

The outcome of Pakistan’s upcoming Super Four encounter against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 this Thursday will have a pivotal impact on their chances of retaining the top spot in ODIs as the World Cup looms closer.

In order for the Green team to secure a place in the Asia Cup final against India, they must secure a victory against Sri Lanka in the upcoming Super Four match on Thursday.

Should India emerge victorious in the Asia Cup final, it would significantly undermine Pakistan’s prospects of maintaining their top-ranking position. Conversely, if Pakistan triumphs in the Asia Cup, they will continue to hold the undisputed No. 1 ranking in ODIs, while India’s ranking would decline in anticipation of the World Cup.

So, how can India achieve the top spot?

To regain the coveted No.1 position in the ODI rankings, the Men in Blue must clinch victory in the ongoing Asia Cup. Their chances also depend on Australia’s performance, as India needs Australia to stumble in their remaining matches against South Africa. Despite a disappointing loss in the third ODI on Tuesday, Australia remains a formidable contender to secure the top-ranked position before the World Cup. Pat Cummins’ led side can reclaim the No. 1 spot in the ODI rankings by winning their remaining two matches against the Proteas.

The upcoming three-match series between Rohit Sharma’s Indian side and the Australian team led by Pat Cummins holds significant importance, as it could play a pivotal role in determining which team secures the No. 1 ranking spot leading up to the World Cup.

It’s worth noting that India will participate in more matches than the other two contenders as they strive for the top spot ahead of the upcoming multi-nation tournament.
